People Involved - James T. Mayer

James T. Mayer is a partner in Holland & Knight’s Chicago office and the Deputy Section Leader of marketing for the firm's National Real Estate Practice, which is comprised of over 250 attorneys – the largest domestic real estate department in this country.  He concentrates his practice in commercial real estate law, including all aspects of real estate acquisition, development, leasing, operation, management and disposition.  Mr. Mayer has represented real estate pension funds, investment advisory groups (for their own account and unrelated third parties), real estate investment trusts, national and international franchisors, financial institutions, commercial and residential developers and office, retail and industrial landlords and tenants.  He also has significant experience in acquisitions of hotels, condominium regimes, sports facilities development and real estate finance.  In particular, Mr. Mayer was one of the principal attorneys who represented Miami-Dade County in connection with the drafting and negotiating of the development, management and operating agreements for the American Airlines Arena.  Mr. Mayer was the co-chair of Holland & Knight’s national retail leasing and development team. 

Mr. Mayer is a frequent speaker on real estate related topics.  His speaking engagements include Subleasing Issues at the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Lawyers Conference and issues relating to Construction Workletters at a workshop at the 2005 ICSC Lawyers Conference.  He's also presented a seminar session to the  McDonald’s Corporation entitled “Regulatory and Contracting Issues in Wireless Communication.”  He co-authored an article, “Does Your Lease Have an Operating Covenant,” in Commercial Leasing Law & Strategy, May/June 2005 issue. He recently authored an article entitled "Going Green with Envy: Green Architecture Is Here to Stay" and co-authored an article which will appear in Commercial Leasing Law & Strategy entitled "Pitching Green: The Benefits of Green Technology and Sustainable Building."

Mr. Mayer is admitted to practice in Illinois and before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.  He is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, American Bar Association (a member of the Real Property, Probate & Trust Law Section and the Retail Subcommittee) and the International Council of Shopping Centers and is also involved with a number of community and charitable organizations.

Mr. Mayer received his B.A., with distinction, from Emory University in 1980 and his M.B.A. in 1984 from Emory University School of Business.  He earned his J.D. from the University of Chicago School of Law and Emory University School of Law in 1984, where he was chief judge of the Moot Court Society, executive vice-president of the JD/MBA Society and a member of Phi Delta Phi, a legal fraternity.
