Background on the Development Process
of the Green Building Education Program

The Green Building Education Program prepares individuals for the Green Advantage Commercial Exam.  The Training Program was developed through collaboration between Green Advantage and the Delaware Valley Green Building Council (DVGBC).  Green Advantage, the certifying organization, created and administers the Green Advantage Certification Exam.  Due to the explosive growth of the program, a decision was made by the DVGBC to spin the program off to a separate organization.  Currently the program is being managed by Resource Dynamics, Inc., which now manages and delivers the training program.

Rob Fleming and Joe Weidle developed the curriculum and teaching methodologies with input and feedback from a number of design and construction professional.  Rob Fleming is the Co-director of The Engineering and Design Institute, a local research center at Philadelphia University that focuses in part on educating the public on a wide array of ecological subjects including green materials, sustainable design, and building simulation. Rob is a full-time associate professor at Philadelphia University’s School of Architecture and he has additional experience in multimedia, innovative curriculum design, and over 20 years of experience in the Architecture and construction industry. Joe Weidle from Bedwell Construction, who also has a long history of green building work, along with a committee of construction professionals has played a key role in insuring that the training program is current and relevant to the construction industry.

The process for developing the program included initial meetings with construction professionals, Green Advantage leadership and the Engineering and Design Institute. Two focus groups enabled over 20 construction professionals with experience in a variety of building types including LEED rated projects to participate in the curriculum development. The training is continually refined in response to feedback from the workshops and to remain current with new technologies available to the construction trades.
